National Junior Honor Society

Osceola Middle School has an active chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. 7th and 8th grade students with a 3.75 grade point average will be invited to apply for membership each August/September. Members are chosen based on leadership, character, and service.
As a service organization the expectation exists that during the academic year students earn a total of 20 hours of service – NJHS membership meetings count towards the service requirement. 7th grade students must submit their completed service requirement by the last NJHS meeting of the year to have their membership renewed for their 8th grade year. Up to 7 hours accrued during the summer before 8th grade will be credited to the service requirement. 8th grade students must be in good standing of Osceola's National Junior Honor Society to receive a positive recommendation from the Society to a high school honor society.
Membership is granted by the Faculty Council and is based on an application and survey process. The National Junior Honor Society is for members who demonstrate outstanding performance in five areas: scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. Only those 7th and 8th graders who have attended Osceola Middle School for a minimum of one quarter and who have maintained a grade point average of 3.8 may be considered.
Scholarship is only one criteria used to consider a candidate for National Junior Honor Society. Leadership in both the school and community is also important. Acceptance will be based on, but not limited to, the following leadership qualities: Student will demonstrate initiative in promoting school activities; exercise a positive influence on peers in upholding school ideals; inspire positive behavior in others; be a leader in the classroom, at work, and in other school or community activities.
The selfless service of others in the community without financial or material compensation is of great importance to the National Junior Honor Society. Acceptance will be based on, but not limited to, the following service criteria: Student will volunteer and is willing to sacrifice to offer assistance; work well with others and will be willing to take on difficult responsibilities; participate in some activity (organization) outside of school; show courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers, and students.
The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic involvement. This student will demonstrate mature participation and responsibility through involvement with activities such as Scouting, community organizations, and school clubs, and has a high regard for freedom, justice, and respect of the American form of government.
The National Junior Honor Society recognizes important elements of character such as respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Students will take criticism willingly; uphold principles of morality and ethics; demonstrate the highest standards of honesty and reliability; exercise the power self-discipline and sustained attention as shown by the application to studies.
